Living close to the Solway, David Currie of Newlaw was a merchant, a smuggler and a slave trader. Historian, Frances Wilkins will explain.
Like many of the people living close to the Solway shore, David Currie was involved in the smuggling trade. Unlike his neighbours, he was in partnership with two major Manx merchants: John Christian, who became cashier of the ill-fated Ayr Bank and John Park, originally from Beith. Their failure took Currie to America in a desperate attempt to avoid bankruptcy. Author and historian, Frances Wilkins will bring the story to life for us.
