March 14 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Virtual Event Virtual Event

Join us for an evening of talks focused on the remarkable Dr Flora Murray, trailblazer and pioneering surgeon; member of the WSPU who founded Endell Street Military Hospital in World War One with her partner in life & work, Louisa Garrett Anderson.
This year, Dumfries Museum is delighted to share a portrait and artefacts associated with Dr Flora Murray in her home town for the first time. Bringing her memory home, and raising the profile of her life, on the 100th anniversary of her death.

Flora Murray was born in Dalton, near Dumfries. Her portrait, and that of Louisa Garrett Anderson, were put on display together for the first time in Dumfries, in time for LGBT History Month 2023. The painting of Dr Flora Murray, which has been kindly loaned by the Royal Free Hospital Charity, now features on the Bank of Scotland £100 note (released in 2022).

A full exhibition on her incredibly impactful and inspiring life will be opening in May.
This event is part of an effort by Dumfries Museum and partners to commemorate and celebrate the life of Dr Flora Murray.

This event for Women’s History Month will feature four different speakers:
– Judith Hewitt, Curator of Dumfries Museum,
– Wendy Moore, award winning author of ENDELL STREET: The Trailblazing Women who ran World War One’s Most Remarkable Military Hospital
– Sarah Paterson, curator First World War and Early 20th Century, Imperial War Museum, on Dr Flora Murray and the Women’s Work Collection
– DJ McDowall, Creative Director, The Imaginarium / LGBTQ+ Activist / Producer of StoryTrails: Dumfries’ Augmented Reality app, featuring Dr Flora Murray.
