Discover events in Dumfries & Galloway – South West Scotland
CHANGE CAN BE DRASTIC BUT ALSO SUBTLE…
The purpose of this collection of images is to not only jog hopefully good memories of buildings and places now gone but also to highlight some of the fantastic buildings and customs we still have which have surviving to the present day.
In some areas ‘change’ has included whole scale demolition, whereas in others it has been confined to simply aesthetics or repurposing. Luckily most of the buildings in the vintage photographs are still in place and are easily recognised.
By merging the images as an overlay sometimes the changes are not visible until examined more closely or perhaps the location of the area is recognised by the viewer.
The vintage images also capture people, now long gone, in a moment of time which, either by chance or design, has recorded their existence as a visible record. These people are in most cases carrying out the same activities we all still do today; working, shopping, travelling or simply passing through the area as it was being photographed.
We hope you enjoy the images as much as we enjoyed preparing them for this display.
