It’s been called “the greatest of all the Dickens films”. The story’s simple: an orphan boy in 1810s Kent is given the opportunity to go to London and become a gentleman, with the help of an unknown benefactor. But along the way Dickens introduces excaped convicts, gloomy graveyards, poor jilted mad Miss Havisham, and, of course, a cast of delightfully comic extras.
David Lean’s Oscar-winning 1946 version of Dickens’ novel ‘Great Expectations’, does full justice to the drama and humour of the book. It’s a magnificent sweeping affair, with an innocent John Mills bumbling through Pip’s London life, helped by a young Alec Guinness, stealing every scene he’s in.
