Free Schools Events for Burns Season: Meet Robert Burns and his wife Jean at Burns House Museum

Schools, nurseries, youth groups and other education providers in Dumfries and Galloway are invited to meet Robert Burns and his wife, Jean, at their home in Dumfries this Burns Season.

Take a look around a house from the 1700s: handle historic objects and see rooms used by the great poet and his family. Explore Jean’s cookbook and find out about the foods that Robert liked (and didn’t like!) Hear him talk about his experiences in Dumfries and family life in the past. There will be opportunities to dress up and try on clothing from the past as part of your visit.

Open to all schools and nurseries in Dumfries and Galloway, these sessions are being hosted by Dumfries and Galloway Arts and Museum’s Service inside Burns House (where the poet died in 1796 and where his family lived until the 1830s). Children and young people can come and meet Burns in Dumfries as part of their celebrations around Burns Night.

Burns is buried in Dumfries not far from Burns House Museum. As part of your visit, we can also give you access to his Tomb/Mausoleum, where you can lay a wreath to the tune of traditional pipes (please let us know if you would like to do this).

Booking is essential. Visits will be limited to 30 students at a time due to the size of the venue and will last 1-2 hours. They will take place weekdays between 10 January and 28 January 2022 (inclusive).

A full Covid Risk Assessment will be available ahead of the visit and the property and any objects handled will be cleaned between visits.
