Jessie M King was one of Scotland’s foremost illustrators. Attending the Glasgow School of Art under Fra Newbery at the end of the 19th century she thrived, winning prizes and acclaim for her imaginative illustrations. By the early 1900s, she was in great demand, taking commissions to illustrate bindings and inserts as well as exhibiting at home and overseas. Gradually she took greater control of her work, producing her own books giving her the freedom to develop a looser more whimsical style. This exhibition of books and pamphlets from the Kirkcudbright Artists’ Collection invites you to celebrate her unique style with original works and high resolution reproductions of the gems hidden within the pages.
In Memory of Colin White, author and historian, 1927-2022.
