As part of Scottish Archaeology Month, Doors Open Day and Kirkcudbright Fringe, Kirkcudbright History Society will be offering a guided tour of St Cuthberts Kirkyard. The setting and history of the kirkyard makes it well worth seeking out. It is particularly important as the site of the original kirk of St Cuthbert, possibly built sometime in the period 750-850, which gave the present town of Kirkcudbright its name, and the site of the most southerly Viking burials in Scotland. There is much of historical interest besides this, not least the variety of gravestones and the individuals commemorated on them.
