Sanquhar ‘Open Studios’ taking place on Saturday 27th May across Sanquhar

Over the first five years of the Sanquhar Arts Festival the ‘arts’ have been growing throughout the town, building vibrant creative and economic ‘cottage industries’. Studios and workshops at A’ the Airts. Nith Valley Embroidery, Carrot Top Designs, ZIP Studio and MERZ Gallery have expanded, while a new ceramics studio is planned. This year A’ the Airts re-open with new facilities for fun and learning, with additional workshops, improved cinema, a bigger arts and craft shop including a visitor Centre; while the café now faces out into the garden. One hundred international artists, writers and architects have stayed in Sanquhar over the last five years, working in residence at MERZ Workshop and ZIP Studio. Sanquhar’s many visitors have made new friends, contributed to the local economy, and spread the word that Upper Nithsdale is a wonderful place to live, to work and to visit. From this year the Museum of Model Art (MoMA) will provide residences for artists who ‘make models’, with models and puppets for Festival exhibitions.
