The Autoharp is a traditional musical instrument with a very gentle beginning learning curve, but it can also be played at a very high level in the hands of an experienced player.
Autoharping has been growing in popularity across Scotland, and this will be the tenth year when a ‘long weekend’ is devoted to the instrument.
Scottish Autoharp Weekend (ScAW) 2023 actually includes events over four days! It begins for some people with an informal gathering of autoharpers Thursday evening as some folks arrive in Moniaive and gather in the bar of The Craigdarroch Hotel the night before Friday’s Master Class with John Hollandsworth.
Friday 7th July:
Stand-alone event for autoharpers
Venue: The Glencairn Memorial Institute in Moniaive
9.30-5pm (with breaks) MASTERCLASS (full day’s tuition) with Special Guest tutor JOHN HOLLANDSWORTH from the USA. This will be a unique opportunity to spend time with John in Scotland (he has twice been the tutor on the week-long autoharp course at Sore Fingers in Oxfordshire and has taught an many other prestigious autoharp events). Friday 7th July (evening) FREE EVENT – there will be a ‘Meet and Greet’ informal gathering of autoharpers in The George Hotel in Moniaive, as more people arrive in advance of the Saturday and Sunday ScAW events.
ScAW Saturday 8th July – Full Day and Evening of Autoharp Events
Venues: Daytime events in the Glencairn Memorial Institute, Moniaive
Evening Concert in The Coach House Stage at The Craigdarroch Hotel
AUTOHARP DAY – A full day of tuition and open stage – starting from 9.30am running to 5pm The Saturday Autoharp Day will be filled with workshops for all levels of player and lots of chances to get ‘hands on’ and to see different styles and approaches to playing, including performances by our special world-class guest from the USA. You will be making music in just one day – even if you are an absolute beginner.
GRAND AUTOHARP CONCERT – with our ScAW tutors, including champion players.
(For those with stamina) late night pub music session at The Craigdarroch Hotel.
ScAW Sunday 9th July – Late morning Gospel sing-along
Venue: The Craigdarroch Hotel – FREE EVENT, led by John and Kathie Hollandsworth, but with participants encouraged to volunteer to lead songs.
