The Folklore of Protecting the Home – Illustrated Talk

August 24 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

‘The Folklore of Protecting the Home’ is an evening gathering in the Cruck Cottage, Torthorwald to explore how people in the past tried to keep their homes safe from the supernatural.

Traditional houses like the Cruck Cottage often show signs of how their inhabitants tried to keep away witches, malevolent fairies, ill will, fire and lightning. Tom Hughes will explore the folklore of these practices with a range of artefacts to handle including thunder stones, elf shot, hagstones, hidden shoes, witch bottles and many more. We will share folk tales connected to these ancient practices and give examples from the region.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
