The Grandmothers Grimm

May 12 @ 7:30 pm

The Brothers Grimm are trying to edit the darkness out of old stories. But as they do so, the voices of the women who created these tales are lost… What will be saved and what will be forgotten?

Set over the course of one night, The Grandmothers Grimm explores women’s role in the creation of the Brothers Grimm’s famous anthology. Marie Hassenpflug has crept out of her family home without a chaperone, determined to hear new stories and to tell the fairy tales from her unusual childhood to Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, who are collecting tales together for their book.

As the evening progresses, Marie shares more and more and the three young people – with help from the Brothers’ maltreated housekeeper – begin to act out the dark, original versions of classic fairy tales.

Cannibalism, werewolf trials, deceit, and murder: Marie and the Brothers try to edit the darkness out of old stories.

Arguments, ego and politics threaten the anthology and the Grimms’ and Marie’s friendship at every turn.

This critically acclaimed production explores the origins of classic fairy tales and the creation of the Brothers Grimm’s world famous folktale anthology through an exciting blend of physical and object theatre, storytelling, and classic theatre techniques.
