Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me, but Banjos Saved My Life is an inspirational true story about overcoming obstacles, pursuing passions and the healing power of music.
Selected as one of the 18 Best Fringe Shows worldwide in 2019, it sold out its run Off-Broadway in New York City.
Keith Alessi was a well known CEO running a company in Canada when he received a deadly cancer diagnosis. This event served as a catalyst for him to learn to play the banjo, a long deferred passion. He ultimately found physical and emotional healing in a circle of musicians and this show tells that story.
His journey to the stage was an improbable one. What was intended to be a single fringe festival appearance turned into several international tours across Canada, the USA and the UK. The show has been performed at Fringe Festivals and other professional venues and his story of perseverance and survival continues to resonate and inspire audiences.
Keith has donated 100% of his portion of ticket sales to cancer and theatre charities. Contributions to date total over £350,000. Keith is delighted to continue this in 2023 and these performances will be supporting Dumfries and Galloway Relay for Life and The Swallow Theatre.
