Discover events in Dumfries & Galloway – South West Scotland
An opportunity to see trade banners and hear a short talk about the history of different trades and examples of different banners.
There were Seven Incorporated Trades in Dumfries and each had its own banner (which they used during processions through the town – photograph shows the Fleshers with their banner. Flesher means Butcher). Other trades and organisations developed and created banners.
Dumfries Museum has a collection of these precious pieces of social history and on April 20th, some of the banners will be on display.
You will be able to view a couple of banners (they are big) and also see digital images of others.
There will be talks by our curator, Judith Hewitt, on the hour (at 11am, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm) and our staff will be on hand to provide information and answer questions.
No need to book, free to attend.
Organised as part of our latest exhibition events programme ‘Fighting for Justice: Strikes and Protests in Dumfries 1770-1920’.
