Museum Curator, Judith Hewitt previously managed the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Cornwall for five years and she will draw on her work there for this talk.
This included a display dedicated to The Goddess – a Pagan deity who takes many forms. Many Goddess archetypes connect with birds in some way and, arguably, some of this symbolism developed into the early modern idea of ‘the witch’.
The persecution of those accused of witchcraft will also feature in this talk with accusations involving flight, feathers and birds as familiars included.
This talk is part of the Wild Goose Festival.
Visitors to Dumfries Museum for this talk will also be able to explore the museum’s two exhibitions ‘The Women of Dumfries: Art, Suffrage, Temperance and War’ and ‘Dr Flora Murray: Suffragette, Doctor and Daughter of Dumfries.’
Free talk, no need to book, just turn up.
