The event has passed.

Three months after the start of the Great War, in August 1914, the Dumfries Independent Labour Party branch secured its first two councillors in Dumfries and Maxwelltown. Thirty years earlier, in 1884, at the passing of the Third Reform Act, working-class voters in Dumfries appear to have been solidly Liberal. How did this change come about? This talk will track the origins of both a Scottish Labour Party branch in 1889, and an Independent Labour Party branch from 1894 – with visits to the town from numerous leading early socialist figures, including Keir Hardie, Tom Mann, Philip Snowden, Robert Blatchford and Bruce Glasier, as well as from many suffragettes.
