Yorkston, Thorne & Khan

Yorkston Thorne Khan are songwriter James Yorkston (guitar, nyckelharpa, voice), jazz musician Jon Thorne (double bass, voice) and 8th generation sarangi player and vocalist Suhail Yusuf Khan. Meeting by chance backstage in 2015 and playing together ever since, Yorkston Thorne Khan’s musical explorations are well-informed by their rich musical heritage but never reverential, preferring to run with an energy and fun that pushes them to new ground, Rolling Stone calling their Neuk Wight Delhi All-Stars album “a game changing masterpiece”. Yorkston Thorne Khan released their third album (Domino Records), Navarasa: Nine Emotions, to critical acclaim. Tackling Robert Burns and Sufi poetry via Dick Gaughan and Amīr Khusrow Dehlavī, traditional Scottish songs, ragas and their own spidery compositions.

YTK have toured substantially around Europe and India, and as both the jazz and the Indian classical music worlds are renowned for their improvisation, it’s no surprise Yorkston Thorne Khan continue to tease the set structures of their material throughout, leaving every performance fresh and inspired. Their UK album tour was mostly completed by March 2020, but some dates as well as festivals dates have been rescheduled into late 2021 & early 2022 as well as Summer 2022. The band now plan on increasing the number of dates during this period and are also scheduling new dates in Autumn 2021 and, Spring/ Summer 2022.

“The backstage encounter that led to this fusion of western folk and Indian classicism has paid off handsomely for James Yorkston, Jon Thorne and Suhail Yusuf Khan. They follow their garlanded debut with a similar mix of original and borrowed songs, blending Khan’s alluring cello with gentle acoustic guitar and thrumming bass; an improbable, but mostly seamless fit.”The Guardian

“Now, Yorkston/Thorne/Khan’s ‘Neuk Wight Delhi All-Stars’ defiantly establishes the distinctive trio as an evolving unit with much more to say and explore than just one album’s worth. They’re clearly not running short of ideas, and I can only wonder at the increasingly enterprising music-making a third album might bring.”Folkradio.co.uk
